Meet The Trainer: Craig Miller, University of Florida

Craig MillerCraig Miller has been a Green Advantage Residential and Commercial trainer since 2000—but he taught green building long before the millennium! He's always impressed by what he learns from his students, and draws on their rich knowledge to provide an unscripted, lively class discussion. With roughly 400 students a year in his Green Advantage preparatory classes, he must learn a lot!

The University of Florida helped pioneer the development of Green Advantage and was responsible for its initial launch in Florida. UF offers on- and off-campus workshops throughout Florida to prepare building professionals for the Green Advantage Residential and Commercial Exams.

Craig serves as an Associate In for the University's Program for Resource Efficient Communities (PREC). PREC promotes the adoption of best design, construction, and management practices—which measurably reduce energy, water consumption, and environmental degradation—in new residential community developments.

Craig coordinates PREC’s continuing education programs, including those for the state's builders; Florida licenses its builders, and to maintain the license, all builders are required to take continuing education courses under the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB). With a background in natural resource economics and civic and adult education, Craig's in a “sweet spot.”

Craig teaches the University's 12-hour Build Green and Profit course as the basis for the Green Advantage certification. His classes vary from those that have been privately requested, such as for a regional builders' association, to those regularly scheduled under the continuing education program. Many of the classes take place in the summer to meet increased demand as builders hustle to complete their CE requirements before the licensing year's end in August.

To Craig, Green Advantage benefits Florida's construction industry by helping its members make more informed decisions on the state of green building practices. These practices have impacts across the trades, and Craig notes that the GA training provides a rare opportunity for meaningful dialogue among them, so builders learn from electricians, who learn from plumbers, and so on. Around the state, Craig sees a real thirst among construction professionals asking, “What do I do about green building?” Green Advantage provides that information to a very receptive audience.
